  • What is Reiki?

Reiki means Rei = Universal Ki = Life Force Energy (Chi).

Reiki allows the Practioner to draw from an unlimited, "life force" supply of spiritual energy from the universe, which is used to induce a profound healing effect. Anyone can gain access to this energy by means of an Attunement process carried out by a Reiki Master.

Reiki is an holistic therapy, which brings about healing on physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels. We believe that the energy will flow through the Practitioner's hands whenever the hands are placed on, or held near a potential recipient.

A second level of training, equips the practitioner to perform Reiki treatments from a distance. This method involves the use of special symbols to form a temporary connection between the practitioner and the recipient, regardless of location.

What to expect from a Reiki Treatment

In a typical whole-body Reiki treatment, the practitioner asks the recipient to lie down, usually on a massage table, and relax. Loose, comfortable clothing is usually worn during the treatment. The practitioner will take a few moments to enter a calm or meditative state of mind and mentally prepare for the treatment.

The treatment proceeds with the practitioner placing his or her hands on the recipient in various positions over the seven main chakra points (which are our energy centres). Practitioners may use a combination of hands off and hands on, where the hands are held a few centimetres away from the recipient's body, or gently placed on the body for some or all of the positions. The hands are usually kept still for 3 to 5 minutes before moving to the next position. Overall, the hand positions usually give a general coverage of the head, the front and back of the torso, the knees and feet. Between 12 and 20 positions are used, with the whole treatment lasting 45 to 90 minutes.

Some practitioners use a fixed set of hand positions, while others use their intuition to guide them as to where treatment is needed, sometimes starting the treatment with a "scan" of the recipient to find such areas. The intuitive approach might also lead to individual positions being treated for much shorter or longer periods of time.

Recipients often feel warmth or tingling in the area being treated, even when a non-touching approach is being used. A state of deep relaxation, combined with a general feeling of well-being, is usually the most noticeable immediate effect of the treatment, although emotional releases can also occur. A series of three or more treatments, typically at intervals of 1 to 7 days, is usually recommended if a chronic condition is being addressed. Regular treatments, on an on-going basis, can be used with the aim of maintaining well-being. The interval between such treatments is typically in the range of 1 to 4 weeks, except in the case of self-treatment when a daily practice is common.

Training to be a Reiki Practioner

The teaching of Reiki is commonly divided into three levels, or degrees.

First Degree

The first degree Reiki course teaches the basic theories and procedures. Two "Attunements" are given to the student by the teacher – one distantly and one personally. Students learn hand placement positions that are thought to be most conducive to the healing process in a whole body treatment. Having completed the first degree course, the students can treat themselves with Reiki. Self-Healing is an important aspect of Reiki, as this is a necessary practice to enable the student to gradually build up their experience of Reiki and their new found Reiki way of life. It is not recommended to start treating others at this point, as the student will embark on a journey of spiritual self-assessment and will need to focus upon themselves and their own experience of how the Reiki feels to them intuitively and it is important that this time is spent reflecting and surrounding them with gentleness. The course duration is typically two days.

 Second Degree

In the second degree Reiki course, the student learns the use of symbols, which are said to enhance the strength and distance over which the effect can be exerted. Another Attunement is given, which further increases the capacity for the energy to flow through the student, as well as empowering the use of the symbols. Having completed the second level, the student can give distance healing and send Reiki without being physically present with the recipient. The student will also learn how to protect themselves and their own energy. After the period of contemplation and cleansing (usually 21 days) and when the student feels able to, they can then practice the Reiki on others safely. The course duration is typically two days.

Third Degree or Master Training

This highly auspicious level requires the student to have adopted the Reiki Principles as a way of life. Reiki is not only a tool for healing, but a dedication that requires the student to be genuine and show a commitment to healing and also to the main Reiki principles.

Through the third degree, or "master training", the student becomes a Reiki Master. A sacred Attunement is carried out and the student learns a further master-level symbol. Having completed the master training, and after the cleansing period, which in all cases can be life changing, the new Reiki Master can attune other people to Reiki and teach the three degrees of Reiki. The course duration is typically two days.

What is an Attunement?

The Attunement procedure is a ceremony of spirit. In this sacred ceremony, the Reiki master uses the Reiki symbols and other gestures in a prescribed way. This ceremony creates an energy pattern around the recipient of the Attunement that entrains (or attunes) their energy field to the energies represented by the symbols. The Attunement process acts like a key to unlock the connection between the student and the universal life energy. After the Attunement, and when the student focuses on the intention to heal, this abundant energy flows through the crown chakra (top of head) and out of the students hands. The Attunement is permanent, thus making the recipient a Reiki Practitioner.
